The basic principle is to search for «Genius loci» in the ornament of urban development morphology and rhythmics, as well as to find its subsequent transformation (conversion), considering the change in perception of the modern city. The search for the possibilities to integrate the modern approaches with city life organization, while preserving traditional spaces, the rhythmics and the peculiar features of the building up in Lodz (Poland).
Lodz has a distinct morphological structure with a certain module that consists of three main elements:
1. The main building of three to six floors.
2. One or two household buildings located on either side of the main building.
3. The T-shaped yard space is formed by the buildings that surround it. It may be rounded by one more household building opposite the main one or turn into a very elongated yard (along the entire block) adjusted to the ends of the household buildings. This will form a continuous building line which usually ends with the main building on the other side of the quarter.
The exterior facade is quite versatile. The themes of different historical styles – from Gothic to Modern – are used. The plastic of the facade is enriched by the bay windows, loggias, balconies with elegant enclosures, attics, undulating cornices, molded decorations, colour and texture finish with natural stone, rough cast, facing brick and majolica.
The facade is mostly symmetrical, with slight variations; it has the central axis, the archway is displaced to the side from time to time. The facade on both sides ends with protruding parts (bay windows, loggias etc.) that usually form two window openings – the axis. The facade has a clearly expressed horizontal segmentation and ends with a cornice at the top that juts out. The window openings clearly emphasize the central-axial composition construction, forming a regular rhythm.
