The Viru Square is one of the key places in Tallinn. It is the place of the start point. This tract lived out a huge amount of changes for it’s long term of existence. From the market square to the roads interchange, from the exemplar of an old city to the city of wide range of possibilities. The target of this project is to recover the authentic elements into completed context of the city. We try to return societal expanse and market relations to the square.
The new square’ expanse images a typology of Estonian castles : convent buildings with advertised towers, inside yard and gallery. For a basis оf the new space area, it’s the space of the castle Kuressaare. The new square includes expanses intended for different scenarios of usage. Interior yard is separated into two zones. This gave a possibility for a formation an societal space – a garden, and public space – an amphitheater. Moreover, the whole space of the square’s core is surrounded by avoiding green gallery. The gallery is closely co-operating with surrounding square building; it was settled to the Former fire station tower by glassy size with vertical communications, for the viewing purposes there is an area installation on the rooftop. A part of this square interlocks with a structure of an old part of building of Men’s Gymnasium, now it’s Metro Plaza the gallery includes a market, which existed on the square. The square is connected with an extant park – The Tammsaare; green park zones migrate into inside yard of the square. The upper garden’s plat presented as a flowers field, planted by Innocence’s. There is an oak, planted inside the societal yard, that anchor an archeological place, where the Alexander Nevskiy’s chapel was situated. In process of creating a new city material, we recited to the Estonian embroidery. Starting points started out of the square, they connect a contiguous territory with square together. Small spaces, created by green plants, fill up the diversity of the city, including new societal spaces or zones into city life. During the great holidays, we propose to use musical trams. This outlook of transport will create a celebration atmosphere on the square and could share a holiday with another streets of Tallinn. For development of the city transport within European Green Capital Award, we allowed a plan of tram ways developing. We propose to make tram lines deeper so that passengers could enjoy not only a single outlook of the architecture, but plunge into a green city Tallinn.
